Is it bad that at first I thought I was seeing a Dodge Intrepid coupe?

Bonus FCA product.

Growing up, I was so disappointed when I found out the Avenger was a slow crappy econobox. I always liked the way it looked.

Doubly disappointing given it’s based on the 2nd-gen Talon/Eclipse platform. So much potential, just wasted on cheapness.

I saw a 2nd Gen Avenger the other day (the ugly boxy one).  I had forgotten they existed, but I remember liking the first gen, or at least the look of them.  I thought they looked good.

Dad had one of those. He was happy with it at first, then it started to shut down while driving on the highway, and starting on its own while in the garage . He traded it in, still owing money on the loan, for a CX-5, first time he’s ever done that.

I wonder what drove him to buy a Chrysler product, given his history with Mopars. His first new car purchase was a Volaré, which went on to leave him stranded on the way home from the dealership and didn’t stop breaking down after wards, which drove him to take a knife to the upholstery.

The Avenger was very high on my childhood list of "cars I like but I don't actually know anything about cars yet "

Wow.

I’ve seen my dad get mad about some cars but never that mad. He’s a diehard GM guy. He told me almost bought a 69 Road Runner with a Hemi after a bunch of Chevys (‘ 56 210 coupe, 67 Camaro RS, 64 Impala) but it was just too damn cheap. As in, the fit and finish, paint, and interior were all crap for a brand new $5k car (this was in 1969 dollars mind you). He bought a 69 Z/28 instead.

He tried to warn me, but I bought an 02 Ram.  The best part of that truck was everythin NOT made by Dodge. The Cummins/NV5600 transmission/NV231 transfercase/Dana 70/80 axles were an amazing driveline combination.  Even the frame was stout.  But the interior turned to shit and the body was a rusty pile of garbage.

One of the cars that taught me, “Just because it LOOKS  fast doesn’t mean it IS fast.”

Now I'm livid that they never made a turbo AWD version. I thought I got over this 20 years ago. Apparently not.

The 6G73 powered variants were fun to drive, even with their 4 speed auto.

It was a Volaré that made my father swear to never buy another American car ever again. I heard him utter that in 1982. He reneged in ‘98, but even coming from a Mopar family, the Aspen/Volaré probably did more to destroy Chrysler’s legacy in a few short years than the Calibur and 2nd gen Avenger ever did.

At least the 1st gen Avenger was at least a Mitsubishi underneath, before Mitsu gave up.
